ARTIST STATEMENT
"Byproducts of the Anthropocene, Collection 01” is a series of jewelry assembled out of pine and fir wood, naturally carved and figured by the passage of bark beetles. Bark beetles and conifers have existed in balance for millennia until industrialization in the human era. As the climate warms and weather patterns shift, drought conditions prevent conifers from producing enough resin to halt the beetles, ultimately leading to the trees' demise.
Despite the ugly circumstances, the galleries carved by these beetles are beautiful and this project enhances that while drawing attention to the forest's plight and seeking to improve it.
To achieve this, each piece is carefully selected for the beauty of its patterns and is treated to stabilize the wood followed by a painstaking process through which powdered metal is inlaid and polished to a luster before it is sealed with natural resin.
Every step of this process is hand-done by the artist, starting from locally sourcing the wood and ending with installing the hardware
